Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation in Marseille. Visit to the Unite d'Habitation in Marseille built 1947-1952, visited July 2008. The building is conceived as a city in the sky, a 12 storey multi-use high-rise with 337 flats, and a number of shops, offices, hotel, school, club, and a roof garden that reclaims the land footprint. It is surrounded by parkland. This one is also called 'Cité Radieuse' and there are a number of repeat Unité buildings in other cities, such as Berlin, Firminy, Nantes. http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/marseille/ The block is oriented North-South. At the time, there was almost no precedent for highrise housing, all of which have been postwar. That makes this is a highly inventive project. This is the East elevation, facing Boulevard Michelet. It includes the core of stairs and lifts. The vertically louvred floor is the two stories of shops and offices. On the same level is the hotel. For most of the building, the flats are 2-storey, double ended with an east and west window. At the south end, the flats change to single aspect, with sun breaking details to reduce solar gain. It's a pity the side wall at the south end has no windows (architectural purism more important than environmental benefit of daylight) The building is on piloti (giant columns), one of Corb's guiding principles of architecture - freeing the land. In the late 40s there was a shortage of steel, so concrete (Beton brut) was used, with unskilled labour. This made the construction time very long, and now results in high repair bills. Such a building would now be built in steel with basement parking. Corb devised the Modulor, a system of dimensions based on the ideal human body, providing a series of large and small dimensions - for ceiling heights, doors and storage units. This is demonstrated in the sculptures in the east core wall. The impressively large undercroft is used only for motorcycle parking, but the growth of car ownership is such that much of the surrounding parkland is now car parking. The site huts are for the repair contractors. The North end has an escape stair for the shopping and office level. To the 21st century mind the decision to have a totally blank wall at the north end is an environmental disaster as the long corridors are totally reliant on electrical lighting day and night and the only lighting is from small electric lights over each door. Any building now with a long corridor would have a daylit end window. The concrete has suffered from acid rain decay, so major works are taking place on the building These appear to have gone on for years. Postwar concrete would not have been good enough to survive 60yrs without erosion. In fact, this is a problem with all buildings of that era using so much concrete externally. The vertical shading louvres indicate the position of the shops and offices. The Entry has a porte cochere in concrete, and there is concierge service at the ground floor - something that was missing in so many post war highrise blocks, and was one of the causes of a decline in their reputation. Up to the roof terrace... a playground with service towers as sculptures, and space for school, club etc. Many visitors come here to see the building and the roof terrace. On the day of filming, the roof is serving for a fashion shoot, with a camera team and the model changing clothes and positions. The reddish tinge of the concrete is caused by the colour of sunset. The Unité was built in the countryside in 1952, but Marseille has expanded mightily. All around are many postwar residential highrises. Some are inheritors, but many are misinterpreters of the good design ideas in the Unité.

Simply Home is a North Carolina homebuilder focused on small, efficient houses. It was founded by Shawna and Wally Hughes, a licensed general contractor who has been building houses for 30 years. Today Wally will tell us about the small house he and Shawna designed and built for their own family of three. Our cabin sits in the foothills of Western North Carolina with a wonderful view of Chimney Rock State Park. After finding the land, we designed a house that would make the best use of the view and fit in with the surroundings. The shed roof design with a high vaulted ceiling and extra space in the loft makes the home feel much bigger than its 704 square feet. The front of the house faces north towards the mountains. We put most of the windows on this side to get a wonderful view from every room. The north windows allow lots of indirect light to flood the home instead of direct light from the south which would make harsh shadows. In our climate it was more important for us to use passive solar techniques in the design for summer cooling purposes instead of focusing on maximizing heat absorption in the winter. During the peak months of summer, none of the windows have any sun directly entering them from 10 AM until 4 PM. Then the trees on the west side start creating shade to help out. We used a metal roof for it’s ability to reflect heat and it’s durability. We set the screen porch on the east side of the house so it has a view of the sunrise and gets some morning sun but is shaded all afternoon during the summer. That way it is still pleasant enough to enjoy dinner in the evening. The front deck is well-shaded and allows us to enjoy watching the sunsets and the weather rolling off of the mountains. Storage space is valuable in a small home and we knew that we needed to plan properly if this size home was going to work. We added a large closet for the things we need. It is a multi-use area that is also the laundry and the hallway between the great room and the bedroom. We built stairs to the loft that give us extra bookshelves and kitchen storage. The loft has a sleeping area for our daughter and more space for storing things that we don’t need immediately. We added a bookshelf in the bedroom, above the door frame, that wraps around three walls. Using natural materials was important to us so we used pine floors and tile in the bathroom and on the countertops. The siding is pine board and batten from a local sawmill. We didn’t want the deck railings to obscure the wonderful view, so we used stainless steel cables. Our little home costs us less to run and is easy to keep clean while giving us time to enjoy the natural beauty around us. OTAY MESA, CALIFORNIA — Construction began on prototype designs for a border wall in a fenced-off area in Otay Mesa on Tuesday. Eight different designs will be constructed over the next 30-days, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Four of the prototypes will be concrete, while the other four will be made of various materials. All of the walls will be between 18 to 30 feet high and 30 feet long, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Six contractors from across the country have been chosen to build the prototypes. Bids for the prototypes ranged from $300,000 to $500,000. The construction site is about 1.5 miles east of Erico Fermi Drive. It is several miles east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, reported the San Diego Union-Tribune. The border wall project is underway despite lack of congressional funding. Estimates for the cost of the border wall have ranged up to $38 billion. The Department of Homeland Security is planning to pay for the prototypes with internal funds taken from other programs. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. APG is the U.S. Army's oldest active proving ground, established on October 20, 1917, six months after the U.S. entered World War I. Its location allowed design and testing of ordnance materiel to take place near contemporary industrial and shipping centers. The proving ground was created as a successor to the Sandy Hook Proving Ground, which was too small for some of the larger weapons being tested. At the peak of World War II, APG had billeting space for 2,348 officers and 24,189 enlisted personnel. Edgewood Arsenal Although civilian contractors produced the major fraction of conventional munitions for World War I, the United States government built federally owned plants on Aberdeen Proving Ground for the manufacture of toxic gas. These poison gas manufacturing facilities came to be known as Edgewood Arsenal. Edgewood Arsenal included plants to manufacture mustard gas, chloropicrin and phosgene, and separate facilities to fill artillery shells with these chemicals. Production began in 1918, reached 2,756 tons per month, and totaled 10,817 tons of toxic gas manufactured at Edgewood Arsenal before the November 1918 armistice. Some of this gas was shipped overseas for use in French and British artillery shells. The Edgewood area of Aberdeen Proving Ground is approximately 13,000 acres and includes Gunpowder Neck, Pooles Island, Carroll Island, and Graces Quarters. The Edgewood area was used for the development and testing of chemical agent munitions. From 1917 to the present, the Edgewood area conducted chemical research programs, manufactured chemical agents, and tested, stored, and disposed of toxic materials... From 1955 to 1975, the U.S. Army Chemical Corps conducted classified medical studies at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. The purpose was to evaluate the impact of low-dose chemical warfare agents on military personnel and to test protective clothing and pharmaceuticals. About 7,000 soldiers took part in these experiments that involved exposures to more than 250 different chemicals... Other parts of APG not attached to the main installation include the Churchville Test Area in Harford County, and the Carroll Island and Graces Quarters in Baltimore County, Maryland. The Churchville Test Area is a test track with hills that provide steep natural grades and tight turns to stress engines, drivetrains, and suspensions for army vehicles, including M1 Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and Humvees. The eastern half Carroll Island was used as a testing location for open air static testing of chemical weapons since the 1950s. During tests of chemical agents and other compounds at Carroll Island, Maryland, from July 1, 1964 to December 31, 1971 nearly 6-1/2 tons of chemicals were disseminated on the test area including 4,600 pounds of irritants, 655 pounds of anticholinesterase compounds such as the nerve gasses Sarin and VX, and 263 pounds of incapacitants such as LSD. Simulant agents, incendiaries, decontaminating compounds, signaling and screening smokes, mustard, and herbicides were also released as well as riot control gasses. The test sites consisted of spray grids, a wind tunnel, test grids, and small buildings... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Churchville_Test_Area The Churchville Test Area is a United States Army facility of the Aberdeen Proving Ground, located northeast of Bel Air, Maryland (in Harford county, Maryland, USA). The Churchville Test Area (39.596°N 76.253°WCoordinates: 39.596°N 76.253°W) is a hilly set of cross-country road test tracks providing a variety of steep natural grades and tight turns designed to stress engines, drivetrains and suspension systems for Army vehicles, such as the M1 Abrams tanks, M2 Bradley fighting vehicle and the Humvee...

Governor Brown: Moving solar forward David Wortmann, Managing Director of the Berlin-Brandenburg Energy Network and DWR eco GmbH, had a very constructive meeting with Governor Brown this week to share the experience of the German renewable energy industry. Wortmann had this to say, "My impression is that Governor Brown is willing to bring solar to the next level in California. He is very interested to learn from the experiences we have had in Germany so far creating the largest solar market in the world. He understands that employing solar is not just helping us to fight climate change, but also to boost the economy and to create sustainable jobs.”

Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Steps for How to Build a Chicken Coop: 1. Stain the sheets of T1-11 and allow to dry. 2. Place two sheets of T1-11 on top of each other and ensure they’re even on all sides. Use a track saw to cut the roofline of the plywood at a 45-degree angle on both sheets at once. 3. Remove one sheet and then, using a jigsaw, cut a small square opening for the sliding coop door into a plywood sheet. For all the doors, the cutouts will later be reattached as the door. 4. On the next sheet, cut an opening for the small entrance door, using the jigsaw. 5. Cut a third sheet of T1-11 to form the side walls. On one of them, cut a large opening for the egg door, using a jigsaw. The other side wall will remain uncut. 6. Cut two of the 4x4 posts to the desired length, then match the angle of the roof using a miter saw for both steps. 7. Use a driver to drive in 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws to attach the posts to the plywood sheeting. 8. Use a piece of 2x4 at the bottom and the top of the coop to give it additional support. Attach these using ceramic screws, and fasten them using a driver. 9. Construct the opposite gable end, repeating the same steps. 10. Connect the two gable ends using 2x4s, and attach one of the side walls. 11. To form the rafters, screw in a 2x4 ridge beam and 2x4 purlins (parallel roof framing), using a driver and 3-inch ceramic screws. 12. Finish the framing by attaching additional 2x4s to the base of the front and back gable walls, using 3-inch ceramic screws. 13. Then, attach two more perpendicular 2x4 joists to form the floor support for the coop with 3-inch ceramic screws 14. To form the floor, use the ½-inch exterior plywood and cut out the corners to match the posts using a jigsaw. 15. Fasten the plywood floor by driving 1 5/8-inch screws into the floor joists. 16. Attach the cutout door pieces to the plywood exterior sheets of the structure using hardware of your choice. Do this by driving provided screws into the hardware. 17. Attach the chicken door by threading a rope through a pulley at the top of the door. Then attach the rope to an eyelet on the chicken door. The other end of the rope should be linked to a hook at the opposite end. A track for the door can be made using scrap wood. 18. Attach the final side wall using 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws. 19. Build a nesting box to your desired dimensions using plywood and 2x4s. 20. Cut cellular PVC trim boards to match the angles of the coop, using a miter saw. 21. Attach the PVC trim boards to the exterior of the coop using a hammer and stainless-steel trim nails. 22. Attach ½-inch plywood roof sheathing to the roof structure using a driver and 1 5/8-inch ceramic screws. 23. Lay down a layer of felt paper, and staple in place. 24. Using a hammer and roofing nails, attach the asphalt shingles with a 5-inch reveal to the roof sheathing. 25. Attach 4x4 posts of the coop to a beveled base using a driver and ceramic screws. 26. Attach the beveled base to a 2x12 square using a driver and ceramic screws to keep the coop from sinking into the ground. 27. Create a pen area using pressure-treated 2x4s to desired design. Connect the pen structure using driver and ceramic screws. Include an access door for cleaning the pen. 28. Cover the pen with chicken wire by hammering in construction staples. 29. Dig a trench in the outline of the pen at least 3 inches deep, and place the structure in the trench. This is meant to keep predators from crawling in underneath. 30. Attach the pen structure to the coop structure by driving in screws. 31. Place a piece of 2x12 from the coop door to the pen to serve as a ramp for the chickens.
